Fire Blankets are an essential safety device and should be considered an essential item in any kitchen. Fire blankets are most suitable for use in Class A, Class B and Class F fires. THey are particularly effective choices for smothering cooking oil and cooking fat fires.

Remember that if the fire is larger then the blanket you have on hand it is best not to attempt to smother the fire but instead evacuate quickly and contact emergency service.

Uses of Fire Blankets

While predominantly used for smothering kitchen fires, fire blanket uses are wide and varied:

  • Smothering cooking oil and cooking fat fires
  • Larger sizes can be used for clothing fires
  • As a thermal protective barrier
  • Wrapped around oneself to prevent clothes from alighting.
  • The flexible nature of the fabric allows the smothering of fire on someone whose clothes have caught fire.
